Preserving Martin Luther King's Legacy — The Quest for Peace and Justice

Dr. Clemente Abrokwaa will speak about Preserving Martin Luther King's Legacy — The Quest for Peace and Justice, on January 25, 2008 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Room 333 Beam Building at University Park and Room 148 Advantica Building at Carlisle. This talk is part of a series being hosted in recognition of the 40th anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (April 4, 1968).

Dr. Abrokwaa’s interest in conflict resolution and peacemaking in Africa and throughout the world led him to develop and direct the Peace and Conflict Studies program in the Penn State Science, Technology & Society Department. He directed the program from 1999-2005. Dr. Abrokwaa has also been involved in peace movements, such as the Peace Majority and the National Conflict Resolution Association.

Dr. Abrokwaa holds a Ph.D. in international/intercultural studies from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, a master’s degree in African/Third World studies from the University of London, England, a B.Ed from Cape Coast University, Ghana, and a diploma in African music. His research interests include science and technology in Africa; biotechnology and agriculture in Africa (genetically modified organisms); education and economic development in Africa; globalization; African politics; multiculturalism; and peace and conflict studies.

  • February 22 — Jocelyn Benson, professor of law at Wayne State University, will speak about "The Future of Voting Rights" from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Room 333 Beam Building at University Park, and Room 148 Advantica Building at Carlisle.

  • March 21 — Preston C. Green III, associate professor of education and law at Penn State, will discuss "Choice, Desegregation, or Funding? Courts and the Black Struggle with Equal Educational Opportunity," from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Room 333 Beam Building at University Park, and Room 148 Advantica Building at Carlisle.

  • Friday, April 4 — Ellen Dannin, professor of law at Dickinson School of Law, will present "We, as a people, will get to the Promised Land — Poverty, Inequality, and Workplace Justice," from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Room 333 Beam Building at University Park, and Room 148 Advantica Building at Carlisle.
