Fall 2008 Registration Tips

You will find a complete list of Fall 2008 course offerings on the Schedule of Courses (SOC).

  • Semester: Fall 2008

  • Campus: Dickinson School of Law (DN)

  • Location: Dickinson School of Law (DN)

  • College: (LW) Dickinson School of Law

  • View Schedule

Registration Worksheet to assist you in determining your course schedule.

COURSE CONTROLS:

Some courses are designated for a specific student semester standing. You can see your semester standing on your Student Schedule.

  • First year = J1 and J2

  • Second year = M1 and M2

  • Third year = S1 and S2

  • LL.M. = C1 and C2

SECTION NUMBERS:

  • 100 numbered sections are courses being held in Carlisle, note the Advantica classroom — Carlisle based students must schedule 100 numbered sections

  • 200 numbered sections are courses being held in University Park, note the UP based classroom — UP based students must schedule 200 numbered sections

  • Many courses are offered via video-conference. If a course is not offered in video-conference format and there is a section offered at each location, you should enroll in the section at your location of residence. Again, you can follow the section numbers — 100's = Carlisle, 200's = UP.

ENROLLMENT IN PSU DICKINSON SCHOOL OF LAW DISTANCE EDUCATION COURSES:

ABA Standard 306e requires that a law student complete at least 28 cumulative credits toward the J.D. before enrolling in a distance education course, which is one that is taught at both University Park and Carlisle via our synchronous AV telecommunication technology. Thus, you must have completed 28 or more cumulative credits to enroll in the remote section of a distance education course at the law school; "remote section" means that the professor typically teaches via technology to that section and is not physically present. If you have not completed at least 28 cumulative credits, you still may enroll in the ordinarily in-person section of an upper-level class (which does not constitute "distance education" under this ABA rule).

You can find your cumulative number of credits on eLion by reviewing your advising transcript on the Transcripts application. Cumulative credits appear at the bottom of your transcript with the most recent semester completed. Note: if you will be enrolling in summer courses at DSL, you may count those credits to determine whether you have 28 or more.

FIELD PLACEMENT:

  • Field placements are ordinarily two semesters. Students registering for a second semester of their field placement for Fall 2008 will be placed in the course by the law school Registrar's office. This will occur prior to Fall 2008 registration opening. You will receive an email when this is completed.

  • Students registering for the first semester of a field placement must first complete an application and interview process. You should familiarize yourself with our general field placement information as well as our more specific field placement information before making your decision to apply for a Field Placement. After reviewing this information, contact Professor Krome to discuss your interest in a field placement.

INDEPENDENT STUDY:

A full-time faculty member must approve your project. Before scheduling your independent study, you should meet with the faculty member to discuss the details of your project. After you have approval from a faculty member, you may schedule PERSP 996 on-line. After scheduling, you will be requested to provide the name of the faculty member you will be working with.

REFUGEE LAW CLINIC

We will be offering the Refugee Law Clinic (IHREF 995). Hiring is currently underway for the faculty member who will supervise this clinic.  You will see this clinic on the schedule of courses.  If you are interested in participating in the clinic, you should schedule it on eLion.

PART-TIME PROGRAM (including students who moved from part-time to full-time)

You have been manually scheduled into required first-year courses.  You can review your schedule on eLion. If you will be taking additional courses, you will schedule those on eLion according to the registration timetable below. Before scheduling on eLion, please review important information regarding your enrollment in law school distance education courses. If you have any questions regarding your Fall 2008 enrollment, please contact the law school Registrar's office at (814) 863-9938 or (717) 240-5105.

INTERNATIONAL TAX (TAX 993)

This course will be offered Fall 2008.  You may take EITHER International Tax (TAX 993) OR Taxation of Multinational Transactions (TAX 992) during your enrollment at Dickinson School of Law.  If you take both courses, the course taken second will not be counted toward the 88 required credits for the J.D. degree. If you have specific questions regarding course content, please contact the faculty member directly (Professor Thompson for TAX 993 and Professor Barker for TAX 992).
