Commencement 2014

All students must fill out the “Commencement Information Form” (CIF) by April 11.

If you will not be attending Commencement, please mark the appropriate box on the CIF.

Commencement activities will begin on Friday, May 16, 2014 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. with receptions for graduates, their families and guests in Carlisle and University Park.

Commencement will be held on Saturday, May 17, at 10:30 a.m. in University Park at Eisenhower Auditorium and in Carlisle at Lewis Katz Hall. The ceremony will last about 90 minutes. Following the ceremony, there will be a reception for graduates, their families and guests.

We want to make sure your name is pronounced correctly at Commencement.  By April 11, please call (717) 240-5121, wait for the voicemail message, and then state your first name, middle name, and last name slowly, two times.

The deadline for turning in tam and gown measurement information is March 19. You may order your tam and gown online. J.D. students should order the Doctorate gown, and LL.M. students should order the Masters gown.

You will need to provide your height and head size. If you do not know your head size, measure the circumference of your head about an inch over your eyebrows with the tape snug but not too tight. If in question about the size, round up to the nearest quarter inch. Tape measures are available in the Student Services Offices at both locations to assist in determining your hat size.

The cost for the tam and gown rental is $42. The Law School will provide your hood, which you keep. No additional adornment or modification to academic regalia is permitted other than a dual degree cord (detailed below).

Commencement regalia will be delivered to each campus location on or about April 28 and you will be notified by e-mail when and where your regalia may be picked up. Rental tams and gowns may be returned at the Katz Building or Katz Hall following Commencement on May 17 or directly to the Penn State Bookstore.

If you are receiving a dual degree (completing all of the degree requirements in another discipline during the same semester as your law degree) and would like to purchase a cord indicating the joint degree, please call the Bookstore directly (814-863-2512) to order. The additional cost is $15. We have given a list to the Bookstore indicating which students are eligible for the dual degree cord. If your name is not on that list and you believe you are eligible to wear the cord, please contact the law school Registrar for confirmation.

You may order diploma frames (J.D. diplomas are 13" high  X 17" wide), Commencement announcements, and class rings online. Jostens has organized a number of “Ring Day” events in University Park for students who wish to order rings in person (see “upcoming events” on the website link above). Please contact Greg Albert from Jostens at (814) 861-5092 or via e-mail at if you have any questions.

Your J.D. diploma will be mailed to the permanent address you have on eLion. Please be sure to verify (and update if necessary) your permanent address on eLion, by June 30th. Diplomas will be mailed in July.

It has been a tradition at Commencement to permit Law School alumni to be on stage when the Dean presents the diploma to graduates in their immediate families. If you have a parent, grandparent, sibling, or spouse who is an alumnus or alumna of the Law School and who you would like to have on stage with you when you receive your diploma, you are invited to contact Assistant Dean Keith Elkin no later than April 11. Your family member will then receive appropriate instructions on participating.

Photographers from GradImages™ will be at each commencement ceremony to take photographs of students as they individually approach, cross and exit the stage. GradImages will contact students with an offer for a free 5 x 7 and an opportunity to purchase additional photos. Our GradImages representative is Kyle Dick. If you need more information concerning photography by GradImages, please visit their website. Family members taking photos or videos during the ceremony will be limited to areas behind the student seating. No one will be permitted in the aisles during the processional and recessional.
