The Law School will offer legal practitioners and business executives from around the world an Intensive Introduction to U.S. Law & Advocacy in Istanbul this summer. The curriculum will be taught by Penn State Law faculty members known globally for their expertise in their respective areas including—advocacy, competition, contracts, international tax, and international choice of law.
Özlem Akyuz Atamer, Director of Legal Affairs for the Kale Group in Istanbul, who attended last year’s program, said that her company often uses American law for transactions. “For senior business professionals the curriculum covers all of the areas," she said.
“The global demand for practitioners with a fundamental understanding of American law especially as it relates to international commerce is growing exponentially,” said Dean Phil McConnaughay. “Yeditepe University is the ideal place to conduct this program because of the importance of Istanbul as a cultural, economic, and financial center of both Europe and Asia,” he added.
This year participants can enroll in the full three-week program or select either of the two modules. The Legal English Immersion and Introduction to U.S. Legal System and Case Analysis course runs from June 24 to 29 and participants will become immersed in listening, reading, speaking, and writing English in the context of U.S. case analysis. Participants will build relevant skills through exercises and case studies with the support of a linguistic expert. The second module from July 2 to 13 covers topics in U.S. Law and Advocacy, Mediation, and Arbitration. Courses include International Tax Law, Competition Law, Contract Law, and International Arbitration and Advocacy. Participants will build their skills in analyzing and interpreting U.S. Law in an International context and will have opportunities to practice advocacy skills.
“We also think of the program as a stepping stone for students who may be interested in doing an LL.M. degree in the U.S.”, said Professor Karen Bysiewicz
, Director of Graduate and International Programs at Penn State Law. Program participants who earn a certificate of completion in the summer program in Istanbul will receive tuition credit toward Penn State Law LL.M. program tuition.
