Penn State Dickinson School of Law to Host Blood Drive

Carlisle, PA (October 17, 2005) — All too often we take things in life for granted – like expecting blood to be available for us when we most desperately need it. Eventually there will be a time when you or a loved one are faced with needing blood. On Wednesday, October 19 you can do your part to keep the supply of blood flowing by donating a pint of life-saving blood at the Penn State Dickinson School of Law, 150 South College Street, Carlisle, PA.

The blood drive is being sponsored by the Penn State Dickinson Student Bar Association for the American Red Cross from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the law school’s Café Per Se. The event is open to the community.

Although registration in not necessary, it is helpful. You can register by sending an e-mail to Danielle Richey at dlr245@psu.edu, by signing up in the mailroom of the law school, or by calling the local Red Cross at 717-243-5211.

As outlined on the Red Cross web site at www.redcross.org, general guidelines for giving blood are as follows: “To give blood for transfusion to another person, you must be healthy, be at least 17 years old or 16 years old if allowed by state law, weigh at least 110 pounds, and not have donated blood in the last 8 weeks (56 days). ‘Healthy’ means that you feel well and can perform normal activities. If you have a chronic condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure, ‘healthy’ also means that you are being treated and the condition is under control.

“Other aspects of each potential donor’s health history are discussed as part of the donation process before any blood is collected. Each donor receives a brief examination during which temperature, pulse, blood pressure and blood count (hemoglobin or hematocrit) are measured.”

If you meet the above criteria, please consider giving the “gift of life!”
