The U.S. Department of Homeland Security was established on January 24, 2003, by transforming and realigning 22 previously disparate domestic agencies into one department to protect the nation against threats to the homeland. Component agencies will analyze threats and intelligence, guard the country's borders and airports, protect its critical infrastructure, and coordinate the response of the nation for future emergencies.
