As a Penn State graduate student, you have library privileges at all university libraries. The policies may differ somewhat from library to library, however, at most campuses you should be given full borrowing privileges and access to the library collection and LIAS databases. If asked, you must present your law school ID to qualify for university library services.
You are permitted to use the Dickinson College library, the U.S. Army War College library, the Military History Institute, the Carlisle Historical Society, and any ACLCP member library as long as you are an enrolled student at Dickinson School of Law. In some cases this will include on-the-spot borrowing privileges. Please make sure you have your law school ID card when you arrive at either of these facilities, also.
The U.S. Army War College was formerly the site of the Carlisle Indian School. As a result, the War College library and the Military History Institute have comprehensive collections of materials on Indian affairs. Their collections include artifacts, photographs, original documents, manuscripts, and other publications that exist nowhere else in the country. Make a point to visit these libraries to complete your research. Depending on your paper topic, they could be a valuable repository for relevant materials.
The Dickinson College library has numerous resources available including periodical indexes and treatises. While the emphasis of their collection would not be legal, they have an extensive collection of Native American materials, both historical and contemporary. In addition, they own the PAIS Index, the Social Science Index and other history indexes that may also provide relevant materials for your topic. If you are working on a topic that has recently been in the news, the College library has back issues of the New York Times, Christian Science Monitor, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post and has indexes for all four newspapers.
The Cumberland County Historical Society is also an excellent resource for local Indian documentation. The staff is well versed in local Indian culture and history. The current director, Linda Witmer, has even written a book detailing the Carlisle Indian School experiment.
