Independent Study
A student may take an Independent Study for one to three credits. An Independent Study does not satisfy the Seminar requirement for graduation. An Independent Study is governed by the following rules:
- Before a student may register for Independent Study, the supervising professor must approve a written statement submitted by the student as to why he or she wishes to consider the subject in question and what he or she expects to cover in the paper that is the ultimate product of such study. This written statement does not substitute for a student-prepared and faculty-approved outline of the ultimate paper as the normal intermediate product of the study.
- The student shall meet with the professor at times and dates designated by the professor to discuss the progress of the Independent Study. The professor may require weekly meetings.
- The recommended length of the paper is twenty double-spaced, letter-size pages for each credit awarded.
- No more than two Independent Studies (for a maximum of 4 credits) may be counted toward the 88 credits required for graduation. If a student takes an Independent Study for three credits in one semester, only that Independent Study may be counted toward the 88 credits required for graduation.
- A student may take no more than one Independent Study in a given semester.
