- Opening remarks by President and Comments by Trustees/Board:
- We need to reschedule are next meeting because the Chess Society speaker falls on this date.
- Jeff sent grading criteria that members should consider for grant applications.
- Kuan from the Chess Society cannot be here; he has class until 7:00.
- Consideration of Grant Applications:
- Chess Society
- Issues concerning this grant application include the high price of food, the two night hotel stay, and the timing of the event.
- However, due to the speaker's scheduling and generosity it appears that the two nights are necessary.
- During the time of this event there is an evidence class taking place at UP.
- It is possible that the professor will let the students out of class early to see the speaker; Jose will see if Dean Elkin can help with this matter.
- We don't want to push the time back because a later time will interfere with dinner; furthermore, the speaker needs to get sleep to get up and drive the following day.
- Food will probably come from Giant; because there are two locations and this is supposed to be a “nice” event, the price is slightly steeper than average.
- It is better to have more food than not enough food.
- Taisha suggests the following:
- $300 for travel
- $ 650 for food
- Posters can be provided by school
- The funds will be contingent on the group's efforts to advertise to community/schools, evidence and, criminal law classes
- It is concluded that keeping the current scheduled time is the best option at this point.
- Looking at items individually:
- Travel — $60
- Hotel — $250
- Marketing — No funds will be dispersed for marketing because this will be carried by the school
- Reception costs — $400 ($200 for Carlisle and $200 for UP)
- Total — $710
- Must advertise to criminal procedure, criminal law, and evidence classes.
- Motion for $710 — unanimous
- Any other Business:
- We have received a few other requests
- Amala wishes to have an event at the end of the month dealing with the American bar association student division; she must coordinate an event to retain the position she currently holds; this will deal with homeless persons.
- Suggestion that November would probably be better for another speaker; we have a lot going on at the end of October
- Jodie Solomon from the Speakers Bureau coordinates speakers events nation wide. Jeff received a breakdown of some costs. Some possibilities include:
- Dean Stein and Enrique Morones — Immigration — $7,500 plus expenses
- Belinda Bugler and Mary Hallan-Fiorito — Abortion — $7,500 plus expenses
- Spencer Overton — Democracy — $7,500 plus expenses
- Next Meeting:
- The next meeting will be November 1
- Adjournment:
- President adjourns meeting.
