Speakers Trust Meeting — Tuesday, January 30, 2007
Minutes
- President calls meeting to order
- Attendance taken: Seth Zimmerman, Tara Walsh, Edward Cawley, Maureen Abboud, Shelley Ewalt, Tiffany Wells, Michael Boland, Crystal West
- Quorum established
- President reviews agenda for the night and the first student group is called in to present
- LLSA: Juan Melendez
- Possible co-sponsors — BLSA, Books to Prisoners, Amnesty International
- Honorarium — $650 and up; we should probably offer no less than $1,000 for an honorarium; he is a well-known internationally renowned speaker.
- We can deduct the $50 for the marketing costs because the school can take care of this aspect
- Reception — Must use school's catering
- Application does not include dinner for the speaker; this must be factored into the funding consideration
- $35 for food per day
- PAD — Judge's Night
- This year PAD would like to have more judges to aid in the judge/student ratio
- PAD is shooting for March 1 for the date at the earliest.
- Gifts must be given to the judges, but they cannot be more than $30 because they are public officials.
- Army War College was suggested as a venue during the presentation; the Trust feels that this will not work because students will not be able to drive, and bussing will then become another expense. This also makes the event not quite as desirable to attend for students.
- Suggestions for a venue — Dickinson College or the American Legion
- Amnesty International — Betty Bigombe
- This event should draw a lot of people; there was a question as to whether the Café or a classroom would be a better venue. We must find out if the school will allow us to use the Café for a speaker.
- The honorarium is in question. Amnesty International should call Yale in order to establish what they paid her for an honorarium; this will be helpful information.
- However, the honorarium should probably not be less than $1,000.
- SBA Diversity Committee — the Diversity Committee came to simply discuss how to go about receiving funding; they have not formally applied for funds thus far.
- Diversity Day: March 2
- Possibilities for speakers (any one of these particular speakers will not necessarily be coming to speak on March 2)
- Bell Hooks
- Cornell West — The group was able to nail him down for 5:00 p.m. , March 30 if funding falls into place.
- Angela Davis
- David Wilkins
- Some of these speakers may be beyond our means. (e.g. Cornell West)
- Brief discussion about where funds could come from for this speaker: Dean McConnaughay, Dickinson College (co-sponsor), NAACP
- Trust's deliberations
- LLSA
- Motion by Shelly
- Seconded by Crystal
- Unanimous vote for $2,000
- Stipulations — $1,000 for Honorarium
- PAD
- Motion by Edward
- Seconded by Shelley
- Unanimous vote to readdress PAD application in one week
- Stipulations: PAD must submit an itemized lay out of exactly how much money they need for each element of the event.
- Amnesty International
- Motion by Crystal
- Seconded by Tiffany
- Unanimous vote for $1,904
- Stipulation — Amnesty International must check with Yale about what they paid for her honorarium. We will pay $1,000 for the honorarium, but if Yale paid less, we will match it.
- Research results for speakers sponsored by the Trust:
- Santorum — $20,000
- Brady — Not available
- Sharpton — $12,000; cannot offer less than $10,000. It must be after 5:00 p.m.
- Specter — left phone messages and sent an email- no response
- Eakin — He will come; we just need to figure out a good time for him to come.
- Katz — Possibly not a good time to ask him now because of his recent donation; Seth will possibly try him later in the semester.
- Ridge — No connection as of now
- Nace — Nace's son attends Dickinson Law; he sounds like a definite if we would like to have him speak; He would not cost us anything. We will take him out to dinner.
- There will be a meeting in one week from today to re-address PAD application, tentatively next Tuesday.
- There will be another meeting in 3 weeks
- Meeting Adjourned
