Speakers Trust Meeting — December 4, 2003

Present: Paul Toner, Jens Wagner, Colleen Piker, Rakhi Patel, Michelle Szelewski, Brendan Hogan, Abigail Whiffen, Tim Wachter, Sean Farrell

Absent: Josh Hill, Matt Hahne, Laura McDonnell

MINUTES:

  1. Outlaw Proposal for funds to host Stacy Sobel on February 11, 2003 for $500.

    Ms. Sobel will be Outlaw's first speaker. She is willing to speak on a variety of topics including the recent Massachusetts Gay Marriage legislation, the military's “don't ask don't tell policy” and the Texas supreme court case re: sodomy … to be decided through conversations between Outlaw and Ms. Sobel.

    Honorarium = $300 + travel costs, and costs for reception

  2. Invitations to speakers from the Trust
    1. Letter to Senator Mitchell from Paul to propose a $10,000 honorarium to go out once a potential date has been determined.
    2. Letter to Tom Ridge from Paul to go out once a potential date is determined. Tim will also put in a call to his scheduling office.

  3. Speaker suggestions
    1. Joe Paterno
    2. Lee Bollinger – President of Columbia University – free speech issues; affirmative action cases that went before the Supreme Court last year ( University of Michigan and Michigan 's law school)
      1. Abigail to contact his office over break to see if he will do speaking engagements this academic year.

  4. Potential Conference/Symposium: Establishing the Rule of Law in a Post Conflict Situation
    1. Has been discussed with some Dickinson College professors already
    2. Sean Farrell to spearhead
    3. Sean will send along what has already been compiled
    4. Jens and Paul to help contact potential speakers
    5. Will work on over the break
    6. Senator Mitchell as keynote?
    7. Transcript for law review?

  5. Bylaws to be proposed to SBA early next semester (copy has been given to Sean)
