Speakers Trust Meeting — Wednesday, November 29, 2006

Minutes

  1. President calls meeting to order
    1. Attendance taken: Seth Zimmerman, Jessica Kusek, Michael Boland, Tiffany Wells, Tara Walsh
    2. Quorum not established; however, we have no student groups to vote on this evening.
    3. Secretary read minutes from last meeting.
  2. President comments as review
    1. The funds that we granted to BLSA are questionable; a member of BLSA mentioned to Seth that they didn't need all the money we granted. Nobody has signed off for the Speaker's Trust funds as of yet, so we are unsure as to whether they need the entirety of the funds or any at all.
    2. ILS speaker was a success; it was well attended for a Friday.
    3. We have a lot of money; the goal is not to hoard the money, but to use it. We need to be available to student groups. Starting second semester, we need to advertise to these groups more.
  3. Ideas for speakers from previous meeting
    1. Each speaker is assigned a member of the Speakers Trust who will do some research concerning contacting and coordinating if possible over winter break.
      1. Ed Rendell — (**Ryan)
      2. Arlen Specter — He will be difficult to pin down; he cannot charge anything (**Tara )
      3. Rick Santorum — (**Michael)
      4. Tom Ridge — (**Ryan etc)
      5. Justice J. Michael Eakin — (**Seth and Shelley)
      6. Al Sharpton — (**Tiffany)
      7. Lewis Katz — (**Seth etc)
      8. Robert Brady — (**Maureen)
  4. Other ideas for speakers from this meeting :
    1. Joe Paterno — He wanted to go to law school and is a big Penn State guy; he went to Brown University. He comes down to this area to speak to high schools; we might be able to piggy back off of another obligation he has in the area (**Seth)
    2. Rudy Giuliani — (**Jess)
    3. Pedro Cortes — (**Tiffany)
    4. Judge D. Brooks Smith — (**Michael)
    5. Justice Scalia — (**Seth)
  5. General comments for winter break research
    1. Ask for scheduler; ask how to go about coordinating if possible; who do we talk to; cost?
    2. This can happen anytime in spring (February, March, April).
    3. Get as much information as possible.
    4. Everyone should try to have information by first meeting in January, which will be the second week of class most likely.
    5. President comments that he will send out a mass e-mail to the entire student body including professors and ask if anybody has any contacts or angles regarding speakers.
  6. Meeting adjourned
