Speakers Trust Meeting — Wednesday, November 1, 2006

  1. President calls meeting to order
    1. Attendance taken: All present
    2. Quorum established
  2. International Law Society Presentation
    1. Don Gressett — Office of the General Council, United States Agency for International Development
      1. Mr. Gressett will be talking mainly about his involvement with USAID and issues concerning policy.
    2. Tentative date: Friday, November 17
    3. Expenses to cover hotel, gas, dinner, and refreshments for the presentation are needed.
    4. Estimated total amount for event — $400.
    5. ILS can contribute $140 for event.
    6. Issue: Will people be around on Fridays and especially near Thanksgiving break?
    7. Time arrival TBA — most likely around 4 p.m. Traffic could be an issue.
    8. ILS dismissed
  3. BLSA Presentation
    1. Craig A. Thompson - Thompson is a partner with Venable, LLP, president of Thompson Communications, and an author. (Presenter notes that we all have received a memorandum concerning Thompson's credentials and details.)
      1. Mr. Thompson will speak about the importance of networking.
    2. This is an important event for law community as a whole, specifically 1Ls, and BLSA.
    3. Tentative date: November 16
    4. Additional dates to be considered: November 14, 15, and 17.
    5. BLSA requests $1,200 (this is solely for the cost of the honorarium).
    6. Jess pointed out that this may be a low figure when considering accommodations such as hotel stay, dinner, etc.- $1,500 may be more realistic.
    7. BLSA can contribute for refreshments
    8. BLSA dismissed
  4. Trusts Deliberations
    1. ILS Discussion and Deliberations
      1. The Speakers Trust will grant $500 contingent on the fact that ILS will spend their $140 first for the event.
      2. Unanimous approval.
    2.  BLSA Discussion and Deliberations
      1. BLSA will pay $150 for reception.
      2. The Speakers Trust will pay the following:

        $1200 — honorarium
        $100 — travel
        $200 — dinner
        $150 — hotel
        $1,650 — total
        We approve $1,650 for honorarium, travel, hotel, and dinner.

      3. Unanimous approval; Crystal abstains
  5. President's Comments
    1. We must meet 6 times a year; we need to be available to all organizations. Propose to meet again in 2 weeks — Wednesday, November 15. Meeting will begin at 7:15 .

    President note: In 2 weeks, we need to have a tentative list of a couple people that we need to start contacting.
