Speakers Trust Meeting Thursday, September 1, 2005

Present: Josh Parsons, Lakethia Carter Webber, Charles Kane, Jason Reimer, Colleen Piker, Matthew Stabile, Michael Boland, Jessica Kusek

Absent: Shelley Ewalt

MINUTES:

  1. OLD BUSINESS
    1. LOUIS KLEIN, PRESIDENT OF THE DICKINSON DEMOCRATS
      1. Speakers Trust is co-sponsoring John Podesta with Dickinson Democrats
        1. His honorarium will be $3,500
      2. He will speak in the Café Per Se on Tuesday, October 25th with a reception to follow in Trickett Hall and a possible dinner at the California Café.
      3. Rachel Goldfarb is our contact with Mr. Podesta and will help us make arrangements for the evening
      4. A formal invitation will be sent
      5. A thank you gift will be purchased by the Speakers Trust
      6. Introduction to be done by Louis or Prof. Cole
    2. SPEAKERS MASTER CALENDAR
      1. Charlie spoke with the Dean about the Master Calendar and he supports the idea
      2. It was decided that the Calendar will be kept in the SBA Office
      3. Jessica and Matt will add major 1L and 2L assignments to the calendar
      4. Jessica will attempt to keep the calendar up to date
      5. Student organizational leaders will be asked to add their speakers to the calendar and to reference the calendar when choosing a date for their speakers in order to facilitate larger turnouts
  2. NEW BUSINESS
    1. SOLICITING SPEAKER APPLICATIONS FROM STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
      1. Charlie will send an e-mail to student organizations on Monday inviting them to apply to the Speakers Trust for funding for their upcoming speakers
      2. Student organizations will be asked to completely fill out the itemized request for funds
      3. Organizations will return the forms to the Speakers Trust and we will then invite the groups to make a presentation about the speaker at our next meeting
    2. SOLICITING APPLICATIONS FROM THE FIRST YEAR CLASS TO FILL SEATS ON THE TRUST
      1. There are two 1L spots to be filled
      2. Charlie will send an application to the first year class asking them to submit a letter of intent and a résumé to the Trust by Friday, September 8th
      3. The Executive Committee of the Trust will review the applications and give their nominations to the SBA by September 15th
  3. OPEN FORUM
    1. DISTRIBUTION OF FUNDS TO STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
      1. The Speakers Trust will give money to student organizations to fund their speakers and receptions following the speech
        1. Receptions are a time to meet one-on-one with the speakers
      2. As a result, student groups need to itemize their applications for funds
    2. POTENTIAL FUTURE SPEAKERS
      1. Speakers Trust would like to host someone with name recognition in the spring
      2. Katz is unable to come in the fall, but possibly in the spring
      3. The Trust will explore the possibility of inviting a Supreme Court Justice
      4. The Trust will explore the possibility of inviting a possible Presidential Candidate
        1. Matt will look into inviting Pataki
        2. Mike will look into inviting Warner
        3. Jason will look into inviting John Edwards
    3. FUTURE MEETINGS
      1. The Speakers Trust will meet biweekly
      2. The next meeting will be on Thursday, September 15th at 5:15 in Room 32C
