Speakers Trust Meeting — Friday, October 1, 2004

Present: Jens Wagner, Abigail Whiffen, Colleen Piker, Rakhi Patel, Michelle Szelewski, Charles Kane, Shelly Ewalt, Jason Reimer, Kevin Skjoldal

MINUTES:

  1. Attorney General Debate
    1. Several debates have already been scheduled between the candidates, so we will be unable to hold an event at the Law School
  2. Frank Emmerson – Terrorist Threat Integration Center
    1. The planning for this event is almost complete
      Tentatively scheduled for Monday, November 8th at 4:30 p.m. in Room 145
    2. Mr. Emmerson will try to bring several colleagues so that there can be a panel discussion
      1. Prof. Cole has said that he could assist by being the moderator or MC
    3. Would like to take Mr. Emmerson, colleagues, and Prof. Cole to dinner
  3. Blakley Panel
    1. Instead of having judges, we would like to invite Jim Waid, a Federal Defender and a U.S. Attorney (or an assistant)
      1. Charlie will look into inviting Mr. Waid
        1. Prof. Place said he would assist in this
      2. Rahki will look into inviting a U.S. Attorney
      3. Possibility of also inviting Prof. Joe Mistic, from Duquesne School of law
    2. Tentatively planned for Monday, November 15th at 4:30 p.m. in Room 145
    3. Would still like Judge Conaboy to speak about his experience on the Commission after the Supreme Court has made a ruling
      1. Sometime next semester
  4. Michael Badnarik
    1. The event was a success and we received compliments from the Dean
    2. There were also write-ups in The Sentinel and The Patriot
  5. Website Status
    1. Place Michael Badnarik information on website
    2. Abigail will handle the website this year
    3. Update the event information to include the new form
  6. Glen Thomas, Public Utility Commissioner
    1. Tim has invited Mr. Thomas, but no other information as of yet
  7. Other Business
    1. Prof. Matsuda did not accept APALSA’s counteroffer and will not be speaking
    2. Abigail will send out a memo to organizational leaders to facilitate proposals for speakers
    3. Shelly proposed “branding” The Speakers Trust with a tag line and logo to be used on future posters advertising speakers
      1. She will work with Dian Franko
    4. Look into an alumni speaker who works for Homeland Security
