Editor's Choice in Poetry

The Ocean — Maryam Muhammad, Class of 2009

This moment
Is it my own?
Or
Has it already been claimed, named
Conquered?
Tonight, it is my discovery
my possession, an obsession …
and
I'll sink deep within;
Claim it as mine
No, I confess
I'll just gaze at its magnitude
Speculate, ponder its depth and swear secretly,
Never to enter
Yet now, consciously
I submerge myself in mere suggestion, imagination,
Descend into curiosity
Sparing my whole from being immersed in this ocean, undetermined, uncontrolled,
and yet
I drown as I stand,
Toes clenched, muscles taut,
As its warmth engages, and its waves whisper,
Caressing the end of me, and
The world will glance and presume
My delay
assume it to be an inevitable entrance
They'll smile, admirably
As a damp touch against each arch, invites me
And though, I step closer,
I'll just admire its strength and stay firm in my own,
As I claim this
a moment
shared alone.
