Amnesty International
Mission Statement
Amnesty International is a worldwide human rights
organization. Its members work impartially on behalf
of "prisoners of conscience," those persons
imprisoned solely because of their religious or
political beliefs or for their ethnic origin, provided
they have neither used nor advocated violence. Other
organizational goals include guaranteeing fair trials
to all prisoners and the abolition of torture and
the death penalty.
Major Activities
Amnesty International at Penn State Dickinson is
a very active group that requires commitment through
participation. We need your voices and your words.
We meet at least every two weeks throughout the
semester and hold several special meetings for activities/speakers/events/etc.
Every general meeting begins with a letter-writing
where our President will inform us of an “urgent
action notice” concerning a particular human
right violation or prisoner of conscience situation,
and we write letters of concern to the government
or relevant authority of that country. You will
be taught how to write a letter if you do not know
how, but we expect everyone to write a letter if
attending a meeting. Aside from letter-writing,
we organize a lot of activities and events. This
coming semester, we aim to have 1-2 speaker events,
a video/documentary event (“dinner & a
movie”), a trip to the Philadelphia Amnesty
Conference, and our big fundraising event —
Hip Hop for Human Rights, a live Hip Hop show in
combination with human rights awareness and education.
