Scholarships Opportunities for Current Students

In addition to federal and institutional financial aid, you should consider pursuing outside scholarship sources. Some opportunities you may wish to consider are:

Gibson Foundation Loan
This fund was established to provide low-interest education loans to needy students whose family homes are located in western Pennsylvania. Interest rate is 2% per annum until one year after graduation, and 5% from then on.

Amount:
$18,000 (aggregate loan maximum during graduate education)

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Applicant's family home must be located in western PA (long-time residency required).
  2. Applicant must be currently enrolled in a baccalaureate (BS/BA), or graduate degree program.
  3. Applicant must demonstrate at least one full-time year of studies in current degree program completed within the past four months.
  4. Applicant must be in good academic standing (minimum 2.8 G.P.A. cumulative and for the most recent two semesters).
  5. Able to demonstrate financial need.
  6. Existing debt must fall within established Foundation parameters. Please be prepared to disclose cumulative credit card and educational debt amounts (for undergraduate and graduate school) before contacting Lynn Dunbar.
  7. Part-time students, those who have taken a semester (or longer) off, and students who have recently transferred must complete one full-time year before becoming eligible for this program.

Interviews are conducted at the Foundation office in downtown Pittsburgh. Applications may only be obtained during a scheduled interview. They are not available through the mail or on the Internet. MALDEF Law School Scholarship
The Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund created this scholarship to assist first, second, and third year Latino law students who have financial need.

Amount:
$7,000 (renewable)

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Applicants must demonstrate involvement with and commitment to serve the Latino community through their profession.
  2. Applicants must demonstrate financial need.
  3. Applicants must demonstrate academic achievement indicating potential for successful completion of graduate or law school.
  4. Applicants must be enrolled full time.

Haneman-Perksie Memorial Foundation Scholarship
This scholarship was established to assist New Jersey residents in attending law school.

Amount:
Varies, is renewable

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Applicants must be admitted to an ABA-accredited law school.
  2. Applicant must be a resident of Atlantic County for one year prior to application.
  3. Scholarships are awarded in any year including the first year of law school.
  4. Annual number of scholarships are determined by the agency Board of Trustees.
  5. Awarding is based on academic ability, financial need, leadership potential, and character.

Alia Herrera Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established by the American Association for Justice to provide scholarship assistance.

Amount:
$3,000

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Applicants must be entering the second or third year of law school
  2. Applicant must be (1) attending a Philadelphia area law school, (2) a student member of the law student section of AAJ, or (3) a law student who is the child of an AAJ member
  3. The winning applicant MUST be able to commit to attend AAJ's 2008 Annual Convention in Philadelphia, PA, held July 12-16.

How to Apply:
Interested applicants should submit (1) a cover letter, (2) a resume, (3) a transcript, (4) a letter of recommendation from a law professor or the dean of the law school, and (5) a 500 word essay on the following topic: "Damage Caps: Limiting damage awards in Civil cases by State and/or Federal Statutes, compared to Juries making damage awards, with judicial review.  Who should bare the risk and why?"  Materials should be submitted to: Cheryl Lange McLaughlin, 1643 Monaco Pkwy, Denver, CO  80220 or e-mail to cheryllange@yahoo.com.

Faerie L. Angle Law School Educational Trust
This trust was designed to provide Franklin County, PA residents who are studying law at an accredited institution with financial support. Note: 50% is in form of a scholarship and 50% is a loan.

Amount:
$2,000 (minimum), renewable

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Applicants must be prior or current residents of Franklin County, PA or graduates of any Franklin County, PA high schools.
  2. Applicants must demonstrate strong prior and current academic performance.
  3. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency on law school aptitude tests.
  4. Applicants must demonstrate superior effort toward self-improvement, motivation and character.
  5. Applicants must demonstrate financial need.
  6. Applicants must supply letters of recommendation from instructors.

Honorable Nathan C. Staller Law Scholarship Foundation
This scholarship was established in honor of the late Nathan C. Staller, a Southern New Jersey trial attorney and Judge of the New Jersey Superior Court, to support qualified law school student from Southern New Jersey.

Amount:
Varies

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Applicants must be enrolled in law school and residents of the following counties in New Jersey: Cape May, Atlantic, and Cumberland.
  2. Applicants must demonstrate academic merit.
  3. Applicants must demonstrate financial need.

Richard P. Noll Scholarship Fund
The Richard P. Noll Scholarship Fund is intended to provide scholarships to deserving, needy law students from the greater York, PA area.

Amount:
$1,000

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Applicants must be current or entering law students at a Pennsylvania law school.
  2. Applicants must from the York, PA area.
  3. Applicant must have demonstrated financial need as evidenced by their financial aid applications.

How to Apply:
Interested applicants can obtain an application form and submit it to the Penn State Dickinson Financial Aid Office.  Two applicants will be selected from those submitted to DSL and forwarded to the final selection committee.  Decisions will be made by August 31, 2008.

Wayne R. Donahue Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established to assist Westmoreland County residents with attending law school.

Amount:
Varies

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Applicants must be from Westmoreland County, PA.
  2. Applicants must be enrolled in a Pennsylvania ABA-accredited law school.
  3. Applicants considered based on grade point average and class standing, if available, and financial need.

Donald Laird Hankey Memorial Scholarship
This scholarshiop was established to assist Westmoreland County residents with attending law school.

Erie County Bar Association Scholarships
Established to provide financial assistance to law students from Erie County, Pennsylvania.

  1. Applicants must be residents of Erie County, Pennsylvania.
  2. Applicants must be entering the second or third year at an ABA-accredited law school.

York County Bar Association Diversity Pipeline Scholarship
This scholarship was established by the York County Bar Association and York County Bar Foundation to increase the number of minority attorneys in York County.

Amount:
two annual awards of $3,500. Recipients will also be considered for summer 2009 paid internships.

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Applicants must be students of color and enrolled in law school.
  2. Applicants must be from Central PA.
  3. Applicants must be in good academic standing.
  4. Applicants must have an interest in practicing law in the Central PA region, preferably in York County.

Military & Veterans Benefits Law Scholarship
This scholarship was established to help veterans defray the continually rising costs of getting a law school education.

Amount:
$ 2,000

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Applicant must be a second or third year law student enrolled full-time.
  2. Applicant must have served in a branch of the Armed Forces, or be concurrently involved with a branch of the Armed Forces. These may include: Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Reserve, Marines, and ancillary departments and programs.

National Federation of the Blind of Pennsylvania
This fund was established to recognize achievement by blind scholars.

Amount:
$1,000

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Applicants must be legally blind.
  2. Applicants must be pursuing or planning to pursue a full-time, post-secondary course of study in a degree program at a United States institution in the 2008 scholastic year, except that one scholarship may be given to a person employed full-time while attending school part-time.
  3. Winners participate in the State Convention in November 2008 free of charge.

Keystone Bar Association Thurgood Marshall Fellowship
This fellowshipo was established by the Keystone Bar Association to support African American, Hispanic, and Native American law students.

Amount:
$500 annually, varies from year to year.

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Applicants must be of African American, Hispanic American, or Native American ethnicity and be enrolled as third-year law students in an ABA-accredited law school.
  2. Applicants must have accepted a job offer to serve as an attorney in a Dauphin County law firm through the Dauphin County Bar Minority Job Fair. Others serving at  Dauphin County law firms will be considered if no eligible candidates arise from Job Fair so long as they otherwise satisfy the eligibility guidelines.
  3. Applicants must complete a form and submit an essay not exceeding 500 words that details their potential for making a contribution to society and the legal profession through current or anticipated legal efforts.
