| Professor Jan M. Broekman is spending the 2007-2008 semester as a distinguished visiting professor of law at Penn State's Dickinson School of Law. He is teaching “Civil Law: From the Roman Empire to the European Union” and conducts a seminar on “Law and Bioethics.”
Professor Broekman is a professor of legal philosophy and legal theory at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, where he previously served as dean of the Law Faculty. He also holds appointments as professor of philosophy of medicine and medical ethics at the Free University, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and since January 2006 as professor of philosophy and education at the Hebrew Academy, School of Academic Excellence, in New York. He is an honorary professor at the Universidad Nacional de Argentina, Mar del Plata and Senator of the Accademia Internazionale Medicea, Firenze, Italy. Professor Broekman has published over twenty scholarly books and 300 articles in scientific journals. His actual project is a Handbook on Law and Semiotics, with Professor Dragan Milovanovic (Chicago) as co-author, to be published by Springer Publishers, 2009.
Professor Broekman studied law and social sciences at the Rijksuniversiteit Leiden (Netherlands) and philosophy at the Georg-August Universität Göttingen, Germany, where he obtained his Ph.D. in philosophy, psychiatry and education.
