J. Corey Feist '98, A Cavalier
for Healthcare Law
As general counsel for the
University of Virginia (UVA) Health Services Foundation
located in Charlottesville, Virginia, J. Corey Feist
'98 serves as the physicians' "business lawyer." The
UVA Health Services Foundation provides all the professional
billing, benefits and enters into any entrepreneurial
ventures for the UVA doctors.
Corey is a member of the Executive
Management Team for the foundation, which he
serves as the legal advisor for all legal issues
pertaining to the business. Since healthcare
is highly regulated, Corey regularly advises
in the areas of fraud and abuse, making sure
UVA is aware of the latest regulatory changes
that impact the healthcare business. He is responsible
for the corporate governance, joint ventures,
third-party payor, contracting and professional
services contracting for the foundation. “Probably
the only thing I am not directly responsible
for is handling the medical malpractice litigation,”
said Corey. He also serves as the primary contact
for the foundation with their self-insurance
company that handles all the litigation, including
cases in which UVA is named a defendant.

He began working for UVA on September 1, 2001, as
the associate special advisor to the CEO and the associate
director of state and federal relations for the UVA
Medical Center. Corey remembers that time as a "two-week
period that will be hard to forget given the events
of September 11, 2001." He moved into his new position
as general counsel just one week shy of his five-year
anniversary with UVA.
“As trite as it may sound, I really like the
fact that I am making a difference,” said Corey.
“Working in an organization that is treating
patients, developing cures for diseases and training
future healthcare professionals causes me to feel
very humbled at what I can offer. Anything I can do
to help the UVA physicians allows them to focus on
their primary job, i.e., treating patients,”
said Corey.
He credits his choice to practice healthcare law to
his internship with the Hershey Medical Center Risk
Management Office during his second year at The Dickinson
School of Law. “During that time I saw the real
value lawyers brought to the highly regulated area
of healthcare. Following law school, I thought I wanted
to be a litigator and gave that a shot for some time.
I quickly became very cynical about litigation and
did a bit of soul searching about my career. When
my original opportunity at UVA presented itself, it
seemed like the stars had lined up,” said Corey.
Corey is married to Jennifer Breen ’98, who
worked in commercial real estate law in Sarasota before
the couple relocated to Charlottesville to pursue
Corey’s opportunity with the University. Jennifer
then entered the field of banking and has spent the
last five years as vice president for Wachovia Wealth
Management and has been very successful in her position
working with high net worth individuals.
Corey and Jennifer have a son, William Breen Feist,
who was born on September 29, 2003. “He is the
light of my life,” said Corey. “He is
hysterically funny, devilishly handsome and incredibly
smart. William already plays golf, tennis and every
other sport under the sun better than his dad. Any
alumni who played golf or tennis with me will not
be surprised by this at all. Jennifer and I are so
incredibly lucky to have William in our lives.”
“Follow your passion,” is Corey’s
advice to young attorneys and current law students.
“Don’t let others decide for you how your
career is going to go; that’s your decision.
Also, once you have figured out what’s important
to you, stick to your guns and make sure you benchmark
your future career/life decisions against these core
principles to make sure that your decisions are in
line with your goals.”

Rain or shine, prepare to pound the pavement on the morning
of Saturday, April 14 by participating in Penn State’s

ALS.
The race will start at 8:30 a.m. and is open to community
members, students, alumni, faculty, friends and family of
the law school. The course will begin and end at Trickett

movement, leading to paralysis.
