Law Students Plan Martin Luther King Jr. Day Activities
Carlisle, PA (January 13, 2005) — Students, faculty and staff from the Penn State Dickinson School of Law have plans to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by volunteering with local community service organizations on Monday, January 17.
The volunteer effort is part of the Second Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Week of Service organized by the Law School’s Black Law Students Association (BLSA).
“In recognition and honor of Dr. King, one of this nation's most revered leaders, BLSA is asking that the members of the Penn State Dickinson community make Martin Luther King Jr. Day a day on, rather than a day off, by volunteering with a local community service organization,” said third-year student and BLSA member Carlesha Green. “Through this effort, we hope to honor and further Dr. King’s legacy and help promote community, equality and opportunity.”
Among the planned activities are serving food at the Ronald McDonald House in Hershey, the Salvation Army in Carlisle and Bethesda Mission Men’s and Women’s Shelters in Harrisburg; assisting with Claremont Nursing Center’s “Casino Day;” sanitizing toys at the Carlisle YMCA; and distributing food at Project Share food bank. A candlelight vigil at 6 p.m. in the Law School will round out the day’s activities.
Volunteer efforts will continue throughout the
week and include a blood drive at the Law School
on Wednesday, January 19.
