Law School Honors Professor Christine H. Kellett as the
Eleventh Sylvia H. Rambo Award Recipient
Carlisle, PA (March 25, 2004) — The Women's Law Caucus of The Penn State Dickinson School of Law recently honored Penn State Dickinson Professor Christine H. Kellett as the eleventh recipient of The Sylvia H. Rambo Award.
Professor Kellett, who joined the law school faculty full time in 1976 and later served as associate dean from 1996 to 1998, received the Rambo Award in recognition of her exemplary contributions to legal education and the legal profession.
“Professor Kellett was nominated for and won the award this year because of her tireless dedication to The Dickinson School of Law, especially to her students. As an alumna, a professor and an attorney, she is an excellent example for the women of Dickinson and truly exemplifies this award,” said third-year law student and Women’s Law Caucus President Cara Coyne.
The Rambo Award was introduced in 1994 by the Women’s Law Caucus to honor its first recipient, The Honorable Sylvia H. Rambo, a 1962 graduate of the law school and the first woman to serve as chief judge of the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, where she continues to serve.
In 1997, Professor Kellett founded the Penn State Dickinson Agricultural Law Research and Education Center, now known as the Agricultural Law Resource and Reference Center, and served as its director until 2003. The Center, located at the law school in Carlisle, is a collaboration between Penn State Dickinson and Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences and is funded in part by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. Under Professor Kellett’s direction, the Center was designed to provide the highest-quality educational programs, information and materials to those involved or interested in the agricultural industry.
As the Center’s director, Professor Kellett made numerous presentations to academic and professional groups throughout Pennsylvania and the United States. She also supervised and published research and education projects undertaken by Penn State Dickinson students and faculty.
In addition to teaching and lecturing extensively on agricultural law, Professor Kellett has taught Constitutional Law and Local Government Law for many years, as well as a seminar course on the United States Supreme Court, and often teaches in the law school’s European summer abroad programs.
Professor Kellett is a 1964 graduate of the University of New Mexico and a 1975 magna cum laude graduate of The Dickinson School of Law. Prior to becoming a full-time law school faculty member, Professor Kellett clerked for The Honorable John A. MacPhail and was a solo practitioner in Gettysburg. She served on the Board of Legal Services, Inc. from 1978 until its merger with MidPenn Legal Services in 2001; was a member of Governor Ridge’s Sound Land Use Advisory Committee; chaired the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Agricultural Law Committee; and is presently a member of the Central Pennsylvania Advisory Board of Directors for PNC Bank.
The 2002 recipient of the General Alumni Association’s Career Achievement Award, Professor Kellett is married to John M. Kellett, Professor Emeritus at Gettysburg College. They have four children and eight grandchildren.
