Eagles Tight End to Discuss Upholding Moral Values
CARLISLE, PA (January 19, 2006) – When Philadelphia
Eagles Pro Bowl tight end Chad Lewis speaks at the
Penn State Dickinson School of Law on Wednesday,
January 25, you may not hear about his most memorable
play or his biggest game; what you will hear are
his thoughts on choosing associations and developing
habits that foster personal and professional success.
Lewis’ presentation, “Surround Yourself
with Greatness,” will take place at 7 p.m.
in the Café Per Se of Trickett Hall, 150
South College Street, Carlisle. The community is
invited to attend free of charge.
Lewis’ visit is being sponsored by the law
school’s J. Reuben Clark Law Society, a student
organization dedicated to affirming the strength
brought to the law by a lawyer’s personal
religious conviction. Through public service and
professional excellence, the group works to promote
fairness and virtue founded upon the rule of law.
“We invited Chad because, although not a
lawyer, he has exemplified these standards in his
personal and professional life. He has stood up
for his own religious convictions in an environment
– among professional athletes and celebrities
– where it is not always easy to do so,”
said Terrell Lee, vice president of the J. Reuben
Clark Law Society.
“In particular he is speaking on the topic
‘Surround Yourself with Greatness’ because
doing so has helped him to be successful personally
and professionally. In a world of big money, pressure
and loose morals, Chad has carried himself as the
model professional. By maintaining his personal
convictions, he cultivated the type of associations
and habits that have brought him success, respect
and recognition both as a pro football player and
in his other endeavors.
“Chad was a walk-on in college and was un-drafted
in the NFL. He is an excellent example of someone
who has fought against the odds and has done so
without compromising,” Lee explained.
Lewis’ exemplary character is recognized
throughout the NFL, and, in 2005, he was honored
with the Ed Block Courage Award, which annually
recognizes those NFL players who display and uphold
the highest standards of sportsmanship and courage.
Recipients are selected by their teammates on the
basis of team effort and individual performance.
Lewis also received the NFL Alumni Association’s
Helping Hands Award in 2001.
Now finishing his ninth season with the NFL, the
34-year-old is a three-time Pro Bowler who originally
signed with the Eagles in 1997 as a rookie free
agent. Lewis spent all but one season, 1998, with
the Eagles and has caught 229 passes for 2,361 yards
and 23 touchdowns in 116 regular season games with
Philadelphia. In eleven postseason games, Lewis
tallied a team-high 38 receptions for 409 yards.
His postseason record also boasts three touchdowns,
two of which contributed to the team’s victory
in last year's NFC Championship game win over Atlanta.
It was during that game that Lewis suffered a foot
sprain that left him on the sidelines for Super
Bowl XXXIX. He returned to play in November 2005
after nearly 10 months of recovery.
