1951
In July, Fremont McKenrick was presented
with The Cambria County (PA) Bar Association President’s
Award for Community Service. Fremont has been president
of the Cambria County Historical Society for 15 years,
an organist at Ebensburg Presbyterian Church for the
past 50 years, a member of the Johnstown Symphony
Chorus for many years and on the symphony’s
executive board for 20 years, as well as serving for
the Boy Scouts on the Penns Woods Council executive
and advisory boards for more than 50 years. He was
also recognized by the organization for his service
as co-chair of the Cambria County Bicentennial Steering
Committee. Fremont continues to practice in Ebensburg
with his son, Bruce ’78 at
McKenrick & McKenrick.
1958
Neil Hurowitz was among five Dickinson
alumni named to Philadelphia Magazine’s list
of “Superlawyers in 2004” which was published
in the June edition of the magazine. The “Super
Lawyers” were selected through an extensive
process, starting with more than 34,000 ballots going
to attorneys throughout Pennsylvania for nominations.
Lawyers representing different areas of practice were
then selected by a blue-ribbon panel for the final
list. (Bernerd A. Buzgon ’62, Frederick
S. Wolfson ’67, Howard M. Goldsmith ’68
and Sandra L. Meilton ’80 also appeared
on the list and were noted in the last Alumni News).
Neil, a family law attorney, is special counsel to
Astor Weiss Kaplan & Mandell, LLP of Philadelphia.
His practice includes simple and complex divorce cases
and financial issues, difficult custody and support
situations, parental and grandparental visitation
rights, spousal abuse, and alimony. Neil resides in
King of Prussia with his wife, JoAnne.
1960
Byron LeCates was recently re-appointed solicitor
by the Red Lion Area (PA) School Board. He has held
the post for 34 years.
1961
For the eighth consecutive year, William F.
Hoffmeyer was the host of the Pennsylvania
Bar Institute’s all day seminar entitled “General
Practitioners Update” which was broadcast by
WITF throughout the state. He was also a co-presenter
of the Real Estate Law Update segment. William also
recently presented seminars to the Pennsylvania Bar
Association Family Law section at its summer meeting
in Orlando (FL), the Cumberland County Bar Association
in Carlisle, the Berks County Bar Association, and
members of the Pennsylvania Bar Association at the
Pennsylvania Bar Institute facilities in Mechanicsburg
entitled, “How to Protect the Consumer Public
from the Unauthorized Practice of Law”. William
recently joined the National Academy of Elder Law
Attorneys, Inc., a professional association concerned
with improving the availability and delivery of legal
services to older persons.
1965
After a thirty-five year career in trust department
management, Peter A. Schwiers is
now the owner of Mr. Toad’s Toy Company, a specialty
retailer of distinctive children’s toys and
books located in Naples, FL.
1970
At the twenty-fifth anniversary celebration of Philadelphia’s
Senior LAW Center held at the Independence Hall Visitors
Center in May 2004, The Philadelphia Bar honored Paul
V. Carlin for his efforts as the LAW Center’s
founder. Paul started the center in 1978 to protect
the rights and interests of the elderly. The center
has provided free legal service to over 200,000 Philadelphia
senior citizens.
1972
The Honorable Thomas J. Ridge will
be honored at the One Hundred Sixth Annual Dinner
of The Pennsylvania Society at The Waldorf Astoria
in New York City on December 11, 2004. The Pennsylvania
Society encourages the ideals of William Penn by recognizing
the accomplishments of Pennsylvanians and prominent
citizens who have made meaningful contributions to
the welfare and reputation of the Commonwealth. The
first secretary of The Department of Homeland Security
and former governor of The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania,
he will be the recipient of the Society’s ninety-eighth
Gold Medal for Distinguished Achievement. The Pennsylvania
Society will also make a $25,000 contribution to a
Pennsylvania charity of his choice in his honor.
DSL classmates The Honorable Thomas J. Ridge
and J. Edward Beck, Jr. met recently
during June 23, 2004 ceremonies at The White House
honoring Presidential Medal of Freedom Recipients.
1973
Nazario Jimenez, Jr. was recently
appointed to a vacancy in the Philadelphia Municipal
Court. He is the Court’s first Hispanic judge.
1976
G. Steven McKonly is the solicitor
for Heidelberg Township and Hanover (PA). He handles
municipal matters which have included a Washington
D.C. organization’s threatened litigation over
a Ten Commandments monument in a borough park. He
also maintains his own practice which consists of
wills, trusts and estates, as well as corporate clients.
Martin Tillapaugh retired in August
2004. He had been the Village of Owego’s (NY)
attorney since 1977. He also maintained a private
practice in the firm of Turk, Truman, Bishop and Tillapaugh.
1977
Jeffrey C. Apfelbaum was named to
the Sunbury Community Hospital Board of Trustees.
He is a member of the Sunbury firm, Apfelbaum, Apfelbaum
& Apfelbaum along with his brother, Michael
M. ’85 and son, Benjamin J.
’03. Jeffrey and his wife, Susan, also
have a daughter, Amy.
1979
George Gvozdich, Jr. was selected
to the Pennsylvania Bar Association Board of Governors
during the organization’s annual meeting in
May. As one of 12 zone governors on the board, he
will represent Pennsylvania lawyers in Bedford, Blair,
Cambria, Fulton, Huntingdon, Indiana and Somerset
counties. George also serves as chairman of the Cambria
County Young Lawyers and is active on the board of
Johnstown Industrial Development Corp. and president
of Laurel Legal Services.
1980
The Tyrone Area Chamber of Commerce held a Lunch-n-Learn
event in July 2004 which featured a presentation by
Karen L. Steele on the Health Insurance
Portability and Accountability Act. She discussed
compliance and employee training, HIPAA manuals and
how organizations can determine if HIPAA applies to
them. Karen’s practice focuses on personal injury,
insurance and wrongful death claims, and workers’
compensation.

Shaun R. Eisenhauer joined McNees,
Wallace & Nurick as a member of it’s business
counseling group.
1986
John M. Abel recently became director
of the Allentown office of the Pennsylvania Bureau
of Consumer Protection.
1989
Diane Burton Dubay writes that she
is missing her friends from PA. “I am still
in New Hampshire, as the prosecutor/attorney for a
busy city police department. My daughter Simone is
starting 7th grade soon but has no legal aspirations
– having grown up among law enforcement, lawyers
and police officers, she has decided to become a chef
instead! Hope everyone is well!” Diane can be

recently welcomed a new baby boy.

L. Kimberly (Law) Bennett has relocated
her family law practice and associated with the Law
Offices of Edward J. Zamborsky in Allentown, PA.
1994
Michael A. Santivasci was elected
corporate secretary of CSS Industries, Inc. at the
August 2004 Board of Directors organizational meeting.
Michael has been a CSS Industries legal department
member for approximately seven and one-half years.
He serves as Assistant General Counsel.
1995
Kathleen M. McCauley married Edward
Fishback on November 1, 2003 at the Cathedral of the
Sacred Heart in Richmond, VA.

Jason L. Buckner is a legislative
assistant/correspondence manager in the Washington

with Flamm, Boroff & Bacine, P.C. in Blue Bell,

Multiple years
Joseph J. Malatesta, Jr. ’74
joined Saul Ewing recently to help lead the firm’s
new Utility Regulation, Commerce and Development Practice
Group. He is a former chief counsel for the Pennsylvania
Public Utilities Commission. Joseph was joined at
Saul Ewing by David P. Zambito ’97,
who served as the principal legal advisor to PUC Chair
Glen R. Thomas ’94.
In August, Joseph G. Riper ’75,
William A. Fetterhoff ’76 and
Lindsay Dare Baird ’93 were
among 35 Pennsylvania attorneys appointed to District
Hearing Committees by The Disciplinary Board of the
Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. Committees hear cases
and make recommendations to the Board concerning attorney
discipline. Members serve three year terms on a voluntary,
unpaid basis. All Hearing Committee members and alternates
must be members of the Pennsylvania Bar for at least
five years and maintain an office for the practice
of law within the District. Eligible attorneys are
nominated by Disciplinary Board Members based on their
reputation among the legal community. The Disciplinary
Board is an independent agency created by the Supreme
Court with complete oversight and investigative power
to review the conduct of Pennsylvania lawyers and
to assure compliance by all attorneys to the Pennsylvania
Rules of Professional Conduct.
Eric L. Brossman ’78, Catherine
E. Walters ’84 and Robert J.
Bein ’96 served as presenters at an
August Pennsylvania Bar Institute Commercial Document
Series held in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Mechanicsburg
(PA). For the past five years, Eric, a partner in
the Harrisburg office of Saul Ewing LLP has been the
course planner for this series of seminars which are
designed to enhance the skills of transactional attorneys
in drafting business documents. Eric and Robert, an
associate with Saul Ewing’s Harrisburg location,
presented the Commercial Loan Documents seminar. Catherine,
also a partner at Saul Ewing in Harrisburg, presented
the Employment Documents Seminar.
Eric’s practice is concentrated in the areas
of corporate and bankruptcy law, business reorganization
and counseling, UCC Articles 8 and 9 secured transactions,
loan documentation, mergers and acquisitions, commercial
real estate, and venture capital financing. He also
lectures and writes on business law, secured transactions,
lending, bankruptcy and reorganization issues for
organizations including PBI’s CLE programs.
Robert’s practice is in commercial bankruptcy,
reorganization, transactional and business matters.
Catherine represents both private and public, union
and nonunion employers in labor and employment law.
Her practice includes affirmative action planning
and compliance, employment discrimination, prevention
and defense, wage and hour issues, drafting and enforcing
employment, non-competition and other restrictive
agreements, management labor relations, contract negotiations
and arbitrations, wrongful discharge defense, and
other employer – employee issues.
