Dr. Leonard R. Blumberg retired in
2004.
1948
Henry L. Stuart, 89, passed way on
April 16, 2005. Henry practiced in Carlisle, PA. He
was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church,
Carlisle. He was also a member of the Cumberland County
Historical Society, Friends of the Bosler Free Library,
Goodwill Fire Company and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Henry served in World War II with the Army Air Corps
in the China-Burma India Theatre. He is survived by
two nieces.
1950
On May 25, 2005, Joseph C. Kreder
will be inducted into the Business Hall of Fame at
the Junior Achievement of Northeastern Pennsylvania
annual Business Hall of Fame dinner. Joseph is of
counsel at Kreder, Brooks, Hailstone, LLP.
1951
Donald B. Cahoon Jr., died March
14, 2005, at age 80. Prior to his retirement, he maintained
a law practice in Scranton for more than 50 years.
Donald was active in his community as a member of
the Providence United Presbyterian Church, Boy Scout
Troop 7, Men of Green Ridge, Knights of Malta, Scranton
Lions Club, Pennsylvania Association for the Blind,
and the Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Association.
He was also an active Republican Party member. Don
was an army veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife Ann. They celebrated their
50th wedding anniversary November 27, 2004. Also surviving
are a daughter, Melissa, a son, Stephen, four granddaughters
and a grandson.
1953
Eugene E. Duffy, 82, died in August,
2004, in Allentown, PA. He was a longtime Luzerne
County Prothonotary, serving from 1982 to 1998.
He was a devoted husband to wife, Olga, and father
to Eugene and Colleen.
1954
A lifelong resident of Wilmington, DE, Donald
C. Taylor passed away May 6, 2005, at age
75. Following service in Korea, he opened a law office
and in 1960, co-founded the law firm of Cooch and
Taylor, where he practiced until his death. He was
a well-respected teacher of real estate law and also
a director of Artisans Bank. Don served as chancellor
of the Episcopal Diocese of Delaware for 20 years.
He was a past president of the law schools’
Board of Governors.
Don is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dorcas,
3 children, Mark, Andrew, and Lois, 3 grandchildren
and a brother.
1956
The Delaware State Bar Association’s First State
Distinguished Service Award will be presented to Sidney
Balick at the Bench and Bar Conference on
June 9, 2005.
1959
John M. Kuchka, 68, died May 6, 2003
(Alumni office notified May 2005). John was a general
practice attorney in Berwick, PA.
1961
In September, 2004, James G. Horn
was appointed by the governor as a judge in the Justice
of the Peace Court in Delaware. He is assigned to
the criminal court in Georgetown, DE.
1970
Paul V. Carlin was profiled in the
March/April 2005 issue of The Maryland Bar Journal.
In March, 2005, Paul celebrated twenty years as the
executive director of the Maryland State Bar Association.
He is a Baltimore, MD, resident along with wife Hildegard
and daughters Katarina and Kristana. Paul is an avid
world traveler. He is a Pittsburgh Steeler and Pirate
supporter and has become an avid Oriole fan.
On June 4, 2005, Thomas J. Carlyon
will be the keynote speaker for the Survivor Celebration
at the 2005 American Cancer Society Relay for Life
held in Hazleton, PA. Thomas lives in Hazleton with
his wife Annette. They have two children, Leesa and
Jeff, and two grandchildren, Dominick and Zoe.

The Honorable Thomas J. Ridge joined
the National Organization on Disability’s board
of directors.
1974
Joseph J. Malatesta Jr.
died on May 7, 2005 of complications related to leukemia
at the Johns Hopkins Oncology Center in Baltimore,
Maryland. Joe had courageously battled cancer for
8 years.
Joe
was born in Philadelphia and obtained a Bachelor of
Science Degree from St. Joseph’s University.
He was a partner in Saul Ewing’s Business Department
and a member of the firm’s Utility Practice
Group. Joe represented some of the nation’s
largest energy, water and telecommunications providers,
as well as smaller providers, municipalities, and
trade associations. He was a frequent lecturer on
utility and administrative law issues, principally
in the Pennsylvania Bar Institute’s continuing
legal education programs. Prior to joining Saul Ewing,
Joe was a co-founder of and partner in Malatesta Hawke
& McKeon LLP, and chief counsel of the Pennsylvania
Public Utility Commission. He also served as the law
clerk to the late James S. Bowman, the first President
Judge of the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania.
Joe is survived by his wife of 7 years, Susan
Jin Davis, '90, and daughter, Sophia, 4 years
old.
1975
The Honorable J. Michael Eakin was
the commencement speaker at the May 22, 2005, Widener
School of Law graduation.
Gregory L. Kiersz, 57, died May
10, 2005, at his Waynesboro, PA, home. He had been
in failing heath since January 2005. Gregory was a
member of Patterson, Kiersz & Murphy, P.C. and
was a certified elder law attorney. He was a member
of the Greencastle Masons, Waynesboro Rotary and the
National Rifle Association. He was also an Eagle Scout
and Cub Scout Leader and Pack Master for Troop 97
in Waynesboro. His hobbies included hunting and fishing,
panning for gold, collecting barbed wire and cast
iron banks, folding origami and traveling.
Gregory is survived by his wife, Marguerite, a son,
Benjamin, a daughter, Martha, several brothers and
a sister and numerous nieces and nephews.
Thomas W. King III has become a
Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Thomas
is a partner in the firm of Dillon McCandless King
Coulter & Graham, LLP, Butler, PA.
1976
In April 2005, Jane Lewis Volk joined
the law firm of Gefsky and Lehman, P.C. in Pittsburgh,
PA. Jane’s practice includes employment law,
general commercial law and construction claims. She
is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association, Federal
Bar Association, Constructors Association of Western
Pennsylvania and the Small Manufacturers’ Council.
James C. Walker has been elected
president of the Children’s Developmental Program,
a non-profit program in Quakertown, PA, for special
needs and typically developing children.

Louise Russell Knight was profiled

Intelligencer. Louise is a partner in the Harrisburg,
PA, office of Saul Ewing. She concentrates her practice
in the areas of utility law, environmental law, telecommunications

Joseph A. Lach joined Koff, Mangan,
Vullo, Gartley & Lach in February 2005. Joseph’s
practice includes medical negligence, products liability,
commercial litigation, and automobile accident claims.

Eric L. Brossman was profiled in

loan documentation and transactions, mergers and acquisitions,

Dusty Elias Kirk, a partner in the
Pittsburgh, PA, office of Pepper Hamilton LLP, was
named co-chair of the firm's real estate practice
group. Dusty concentrates her practice on all aspects
of real estate development, with an emphasis on real
estate litigation, including real estate tax assessment
appeals, land use and zoning appeals, and eminent
domain proceedings. She is a member of the Board of
Governors of the Allegheny County Bar Association
and assistant treasurer of the council for the real
property section of the ACBA. Dusty also serves as
chair of Family Link, part of the Family Resource
Network of the American Diabetes Association of Western
Pennsylvania; chair of the board of directors of Planned
Parenthood of Western Pennsylvania; and secretary
of the board of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
of Western Pennsylvania.
David C. Klementik was inducted
into the Benton Area School District’s Hall
of Fame.
1981
Pennsylvania State Representative The Honorable
Glen R. Grell (R-87) was appointed to the
(PA) House Judiciary, Aging and Older Adult Services,
Consumer Affairs, and Intergovernmental Affairs Committees
for the 2005-2006 legislative session.
Bryan J. Simmons was a judge in
the Junior High Earth Science category of the fifty-second
Lancaster Newspapers Science and Engineering Fair
held in March 2005 at Franklin and Marshall College,
Lancaster, PA. Brian is senior counsel with Hershey
Foods Corp.
1982
Merri Jo Gillette received the Alumni
Merit Award by Northwestern University. Merri Jo is
a 1979 Northwestern University graduate. She is an
attorney for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
1983
Luther G. Anderson, who serves as
Vice President of Legal Affairs for Harrah's Entertainment,
Inc's Eastern Division, has been assigned responsibility
for the legal function for Harrah's Chester Downs
Racetrack in Chester, PA.
Shaun R. Eisenhauer was profiled
in the March 14, 2005, Philadelphia, PA Legal
Intelligencer. Shaun is a member of the Harrisburg,
PA, office of McNees Wallace & Nurick LLC. He
concentrates his practice in the areas of business
counseling, financial services, and real estate law.
Lisa A. Hook was the commencement
speaker at the 2005 law school graduation ceremony
held May 14. Lisa is the former president of America
Online (AOL) Broadband, Premium and Developer Services.
She recently left AOL to found a new company.
Elizabeth Dougherty Maguschak was
selected as the recipient of the 2005 Greater Hazleton
Chamber of Commerce Athena Award. She is also the
2005 PEARL Award recipient of the YWCC of Greater
Hazleton. Elizabeth is chair of the board of directors
for the United Way of Greater Hazleton, will begin
serving on the board of directors of the Greater Hazleton
Chamber of Commerce, is a member of the Hazleton Kiwanis
Club, as well as a lector in her parish, the Church
of St. Gabriel. She resides in Hazleton with her husband,
Mark, and children, Joseph and Molly.
Michael E. Scullin was appointed
to The Alliance Francaise de Philadelphie’s
board of directors. The Alliance Francaise de Philadelphie
is dedicated to introducing others to the French language
and culture through its French language school and
events throughout the year. Michael is of counsel
to the law firm of Monteverde, McAlee & Hurd,
where he has handled a broad variety commercial, nonprofit,
international and litigation matters. He is also a
business consultant to firms and nonprofits, advising
on global expansion initiatives. As co-chair of the
International Law Committee of the Philadelphia Bar
Association, he established an exchange program with
the bar association of Lyon, France. Michael is a
member of the Board of the French American Chamber
of Commerce in Philadelphia, and previously acted
as an international legal advisor in Geneva. Michael
is also a member of the adjunct faculty of Temple
University.
Douglas R. Widin joined Reed Smith’s
Philadelphia, PA, office as counsel in the firm’s
insurance recovery practice group. He will represent
corporate policyholders in insurance coverage matters
and disputes with their insurers.

Catherine E. Walters was profiled

Robert J. DeSousa, was named to the
West Hanover Township, Dauphin County, PA, Zoning
Hearing Board as an alternate member by the Board
of Supervisors for a five year term. Robert is Chief
Executive Officer of the Vartan Group, Inc., located
in Harrisburg, PA. A Major, he also serves the 28th
Infantry Division in the capacity of a Judge Advocate
General. Robert, his wife Elizabeth and their four
children live in West Hanover Township, PA.
Michael A. Genello was elected vice
president of the Lackawanna Bar Association. Michael
is a member of Murphy, Piazza and Genello, Scranton,

John K. Gordon was elected president
of the Fairmount (Philadelphia, PA) Community Development
Corporation in January, 2005.
F. Lisa Murtha joined Huron Consulting
Group’s New York office as managing director
in their higher education practice. Lisa will assist
academic medical center and research institution clients
with compliance issues, including clinical trial compliance,
billing, and operations. She is a founding member
and current board member of the Health Care Compliance
Association.

John M. Flannery and Susan
Nanovic Flannery welcomed a second child,
John Francis, on April 1, 2005. He joins big sister
Caroline, age 2. Susan works as an Assistant General
Counsel with MetLife in New York City and manages
the Employment Litigation practice group. John manages
a group of 35 litigation attorneys in the White Plains,
NY, office of Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman &
Dicker, LLP.
Amanda E. Myers-Campbell sends the
following update: “I married David R. Campbell,
Esq. in May 1997. Daughter, Julia Taylor Campbell
was born in June, 2000.” She is a stay at home
mom with Julia, “now 4 and a half and doing
well.“ In January, 2005, Amanda’s husband
opened his own law firm in Lancaster, PA specializing
in health care law and compliance and general corporate
law. Amanda is assisting with the opening and operation
of the firm.

Oliver W.
Horsman, 73, died April 1, 2005.
Oliver served in the U.S. Army during the Korean
Conflict. He then spent 30 years in the Naval
Reserve and retired with the rank of captain,
Naval Intelligence, Department of the Navy.
He is survived by his wife, Lily, two sons,
James and Harold, three daughters, Jane, Elizabeth
and Johanna, two stepsons, William and Peter
and 14 grandchildren.

Cozen O'Connor member Michael A. Hamilton
recently spoke at the Insurance Coverage and Claims
Institute Conference in Chicago. Michael’s presentation
titled, "General Liability Coverage Considerations
in Copyright, Trademark and Trade Secret Litigation,"
focused on recent trends and developments in advertising
law. He also served as co-chair of the conference
and chair of its program agenda for commercial lines
insurance coverage. Michael concentrates his practice
in insurance coverage, bad faith defense, and commercial
litigation. A frequent lecturer for local and national
organizations and co-author for a number of articles,
he is a member of the American Bar Association's Tort
and Insurance Practice Section, the Pennsylvania Bar
Association's Civil Litigation Section, the New Jersey
Bar Association's Insurance Law Section as well as
the Defense Research Institute's Insurance Law Committee
and the Philadelphia Bar Association. Michael resides
in Bryn Mawr, PA.
Todd C. Simmens was elected to a
three-year term on the East Brunswick (NJ) Board of
Education. Todd’s term begins May 5, 2005.
Andrew K. Stutzman was profiled

Heather M. Faust, 33, died unexpectedly
on April 18, 2005. Heather was an attorney with Killian
& Gephart, LLP, Harrisburg, PA. She was an animal
lover and a volunteer for “PAWS” of Carlisle.
Jennifer Gornall-Rouch was awarded
a 2005 Generation-E Leadership Award from Young Erie
(PA) Professionals. Jennifer is an attorney at Knox,
McLaughlin, Gornall and Sennett. She concentrates
her practice in education and governmental law.
Mark A. Mateya represents The County
Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania in a numbers
of cases with state-wide significance.
Michael D. O’Mara was profiled

Ashley (Himes) Kranich joined the
State College, PA, office of McNees Wallace &
Nurick. Ashley will practice in the asset planning
and federal taxation group.
Karen Hennon McConnell and husband,
Robert, had twin sons, Jacob Alexander and Nathaniel
Robert, on August 4, 2004.
1998
On April 6, 2005, Andrew D. Bulgin
and wife, Jen Keyser, welcomed their first child,
a son, Jacob Andrew, 8 lbs. 4 oz., 20 1/2" long.
Brian J. Walsh and his wife, Lori,
are pleased to announce the birth of their son, Brian
Patrick.
1999
Pennsylvania Secretary of Commonwealth, The
Honorable Pedro A. Cortes, continues to be
active throughout Pennsylvania. He was named to the
board of Harrisburg (PA) Area Community College. He
recently spent a day in the Lehigh Valley speaking
to residents of the Basilio Huertas Senior Center
in Bethlehem, PA, and fourth to seventh graders at
Life Academy and Early Learning Center, Allentown,
PA, completing the trip with a speech at the thirty-seventh
anniversary dinner of the Council of Spanish Speaking
Organizations in Bethlehem, PA. Secretary Cortes gave
the keynote address at the Minority Alumni Banquet
sponsored by the law school’s Minority Law Students
Association (MLSA) on March 19, 2005. He also gave
opening remarks at the eleventh annual Amani Festival,
a multicultural arts and music festival, held May
7, 2005, in downtown Carlisle, PA.
Alan W. Flenner is home from Iraq
and settling back into family life. He sends the following
message, “I very much appreciate the support
that . . . folks at DSL provided while I was overseas.
Despite the hardship of family separation, I must
say that my experience in Fallujah was very rewarding.
As the Officer in Charge of Reconstruction in Fallujah,
I worked closely with the people of Fallujah to help
them rebuild their city after the November battle
to drive out the insurgents. Although underreported
in the media, most of the people in Fallujah accept
and agree with the actions taken against the insurgents.”
Alan was on active duty through the end of April.
David Shane Gunter joined the Charlotte,
NC, office of Kilpatrick Stockton LLP as an associate
in the capital markets practice group.
Donald F. Martino joined Reiders,
Travis, Humphrey, Harris, Waters and Waffenschmidt
in February 2005. Donald concentrates his practice
on criminal law, state and federal criminal defense
cases, family law and divorce. He is a member of the
Lycoming Law Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Association
and the Pennsylvania Association of Criminal Defense
Lawyers. He serves as a Lycoming County pro bono referral
attorney and is on the board of directors of Big Brothers/Big
Sisters. He and wife Eileen Dgien reside in Trout
Run, PA.
Amy
(Morrissey) Turk has made the jump from a
small firm to the large national firm of McGuire Woods
in Norfolk, VA. She is a member of the firm’s
labor and employment department. Her practice involves
the representation of management in federal and state
employment litigation, including discrimination and
harassment. Amy married Brian M. Turk on September
28, 2002. The couple have two children, Ashlyn (14)
and Brian Jr. (12).

Brooke V. Elvington is working with
the defense team on the case of United States v. Sami
Al Arian et al, in Tampa, Florida. She has been accepted
into a graduate program in Criminology at the University
of Oxford in Great Britain. Brooke also married her
long-time fiance, David Hatami, in February, 2005,
in Venice, Italy. Classmate Kara K. Messner
flew to Italy to attend.
Paula K. Knudsen was the speaker
at the York County (PA) Bar Foundation’s Law
Day Luncheon held May 2, 2005. Paula is with the American
Civil Liberties Union and litigates in federal and
state courts on behalf of persons whose civil liberties
have been violated. She is one of the attorneys representing
the plaintiffs in the Dover (PA) intelligent design
case.
Alisa M. Wrase joined the commercial
development and real estate investments practice group
of Troutman Sanders LLP’s Tysons Corner, VA,
office.
2002
Arlen R. Day II joined the Pottsville,
PA, firm of Riley and Fanelli P.C. Rick will focus
his practice on personal injury, criminal defense,
and general civil litigation.
Alfred Villoch III accepted a position
with Buchanan Ingersoll P.C. in its Tampa, FL, office.
Alfred will practice commercial litigation and bankruptcy
law. Since graduation, Alfred has been an associate
at Young Conaway Stargatt & Taylor, LLP in Wilmington,
Delaware, practicing law in its Business and Corporate
Restructuring Group.
LaMonte J. Williams II was named
deputy chief counsel for administration in the new
Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, the agency that
will regulate slot-machine gambling in the state.
He is the first of the board’s five member in-house
legal team to be named. LaMonte will oversee employment
and equal opportunity policies for the agency.
2004
Michael Joseph Heaton is now working
in the Washington, DC, office of Congressman Michael
R. Turner (OH-3). Joe is a legislative assistant for
social security, health care, education, tax policy,
and judiciary committee issues.
Michael M. Jerominski joined the
Turo Law Offices in Carlisle, PA. He was admitted
to practice before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court

has been dissolved and separated into two non-related
law firms. Judith T. Walz ’69
and Shaubut C. Walz III ’71
formed Walz & Walz, Attorneys at Law, P.C. Their
office continues to be located in Newport, PA. Marc
A. Scaringi and Melanie Walz Scaringi ’01
formed Scaringi & Scaringi, P.C. Their office
is located in Harrisburg, PA.
The National Trial Moot Court Team comprised of new
alums Michael J. Davey ’05,
Christin J. Mehrtens ’05, and
Saleem M. Mawji ’05 and coached
by Hubert X. Gilroy ’79, recently
competed as one of twenty-six teams at the National
Trial Competition in San Antonio, TX. The team was
2-0 after random pairings against Syracuse and the
Thomas M. Cooley Law School of Lansing, MI. They were
then paired with St. John’s University, the
2003 National Champion; also 2-0 at that point. The
balloting was extremely close with the Penn State
Dickinson team losing two of the three ballots by
one point each. St. Johns ultimately advanced to the
quarterfinals. The law school team earned Regional
Champion honors after defeating Temple in the Regional
competition held in Philadelphia in February, 2005.
The second Penn State Dickinson trial team consisting

Burchett ’05 and Miriam Enriquez
’05 were Regional Semi-finalists.
Laura Lyon Slaymaker ’92
and husband, Samuel C. Slaymaker III ’89,
have moved to Georgia. Laura is with the Office of
the United States Trustee, a division of the Department
of Justice. Sam is working full-time on his master’s
degree in history from Millersville University. Prior
to their move, Sam was the executive director of Wheatland,
President James Buchanan’s Historic Homestead,
Lancaster, PA.
Matthew P. Hughson ’02 was
profiled in a March 2005 Sunday Star Gazette
(Elmira, NY) article. Matt practices Bankruptcy and
Real Estate at Ziff, Weiermiller, Hayden & Mustico,
LLP, Elmira, NY. He is an avid observed trials motorcycle
competitor and has been ranked as high as ninth in
New York. When not working or cycling, he enjoys skiing
with son, Ryne and spending time with his wife Valerie.
