1954
The York Daily Record (PA) recently profiled
Jane M. Alexander for her role as
a mentor to female attorneys.
1960
In December 2004, Clearfield County (PA) President
Judge John K. Reilly, Jr. marked
the end of thirty years of service on the bench. A
portrait depicting him standing at the bench will
hang in the main courtroom at the Clearfield County
Courthouse.
Robert B. Surrick, executive director
of the Politically Active Physicians Association,
has been speaking across Pennsylvania on medical malpractice
suits, increased malpractice insurance premiums for
doctors, and those issues as contributing factors
for doctors leaving the state. Robert is also leading
the group’s efforts to counter frivolous lawsuits.
1962
Bernerd A. Buzgon was recently elected
president of the Lebanon County (PA) Division of the
American Heart Association.
1969
G. Robert Marcus is included in the
Corporate, Mergers & Acquisitions and Securities
Law section of “The Best Lawyers in America”
2005-2006 edition. Robert is chairman of the management
committee in the Somerville, NJ, firm of Norris McLaughlin
& Marcus, P.A. He practices in the corporate and
tax departments and heads the mergers and acquisitions
practice.
1970
Walter G. Reinhard is included in
the Public Utility Law section of “The Best
Lawyers in America” 2005-2006 edition. Walter,
a member of the Somerville, NJ law firm Norris McLaughlin
& Marcus, P.A., spends the vast majority of his
time practicing administrative, environmental and
regulatory law.
The Honorable George H. Stanger, Jr.,
assignment judge for Vicinage 15 (NJ), announced that
he will retire May 31, 2005. As assignment judge,
he assigned Superior Court judges to criminal, family
and civil division cases filed in three counties and
was responsible for forty-six municipal courts. He
intends to garden, and fish on his two-year-old boat
to fill up the free time of retirement.
1972
The Honorable Richard A. Lewis was
inducted as president judge of the Court of Common
Pleas of Dauphin County (PA) on February 28, 2005.
The Honorable Thomas J. Ridge will
be the principal speaker May 21, 2005 at Lafayette
College’s 170th commencement ceremony, during
which he will be presented with an honorary degree.
Additionally, he will speak at Bucknell University’s
155th commencement on May 22, 2005. He will receive
the Bucknell Award of Merit from that institution
in recognition of his “exceptional contributions
to his profession and community.”
In March, 2005, the Superior Court held a special
session of argument court in the Lackawanna County
(PA) Courthouse chaired by Superior Court Judge Correale
F. Stevens. Judge Stevens also chaired a
special session of the court at Villanova Law School
in April 2005. He is on the Legislation and Technology
Committees of the court and was appointed to a special
tribunal which heard the appeal of a former Supreme
Court Justice. Outside his Hazle Township (PA) court
chambers, he is an avid hiker and runner. He lives
in Sugarloaf, PA with his family.
1973
In February, 2005, Terry R. Bossert
joined Post & Schell’s Harrisburg (PA) office
as a partner and chair of the firm’s new Environmental
Regulation & Litigation Group.
1975
In January, 2005, Dennis S. Deutsch
joined Kaufman, Gelbert & Bern, LLP as a partner.
Dennis heads the firm’s litigation department
with a concentration on civil litigation, employment
law, technology law and personal injury. The firm
has since been renamed Kaufman, Bern & Deutsch,
LLP.

published by the law school’s Career Services
Office featured Mary Ellen Krober.
Mary Ellen is a staff attorney for the U.S. Postal
Services Philadelphia Field Office.
The Herald Journal (Spartanburg, SC) and
the New York Times recently profiled Reid
H. Weingarten for his work as defense counsel
for several high profile clients in cases involving
WorldCom, Rite Aid, Tyco International, and Enron.
1977
The Greater Pittston Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick
named William F. Anzalone as General
Chairman of their annual Saint Patrick’s Day
event.
The Alcoa, Inc. board of directors elected Judith
(Lytle) Nocito to the position of assistant
general counsel in January 2005. Previously corporate
secretary, Judith now serves as group counsel to the
Automotive, Aerospace and Commercial Products Group
and the Rigid Packaging, Foil and Asia Group.
Randall J. Rolls recently appeared
in the Fredericktowne Players’ production of
“It’s a Wonderful Life,” playing
the part of Mr. Gower, the druggist. In real life,
Randy is an assistant vice president and agency counsel
for Chicago Title Insurance Company in Baltimore,
MD.
1978
Eric L. Brossman, a partner in Saul
Ewing’s (PA) Business and Bankruptcy Departments,
was a member of the faculty panel for a Pennsylvania
Bar Institute seminar, “Structuring and Drafting
Commercial Loan Documents” in March, 2005. Eric
discussed “Indemnities, Releases and Waivers,”
“Third Party Agreements” and “Creation,
Attachment and Perfection of Security Interests in
Intellectual Property Assets.”
Karl F. Longenbach is the 2005 president
of the Northampton County (PA) Bar Association. Karl
has a private law practice in Bethlehem, PA and serves
as conflicts counsel for the county.
1979
Hubert X. Gilroy coached the law
school’s National Trial Moot Court team to a
berth in the 30th Annual National Trial Competition
in San Antonio. Hubert has coached the team for seven
years. This is the first time since 1986 that the
law school has won the regional championship.
The North Central Geriatric Interest Network hosted
Joseph P. McGowan, Pennsylvania’s
senior deputy attorney general, at their quarterly
breakfast meeting held at the Williamsport Hospital
in February 2005. J.P. identified the current scams
that are being perpetrated upon the elderly population,
discussed measures that professional elder care workers
can take to help protect their senior clients, provided
tips to seniors so they can protect themselves from
scams and gave information on what to do if seniors
do become victims of scams.
1981
Anniken (Horton) Davenport recently
published her first textbook. In January 2005, Pearson/Prentice
Hall published the textbook, Basic Criminal Law,
the U.S. Constitution, Procedures, and Crimes,
which is aimed at undergraduate students in criminal
justice and legal studies/paralegal programs.
Fred H. Hait is of counsel to Smigel,
Anderson & Sacks, LLP, Harrisburg, PA.
Craig J. Staudenmaier, a partner
in the Harrisburg, PA law firm Nauman, Smith, Shissler
and Hall, LLP, recently participated in a three-person
panel discussion for Central Penn College students
and faculty, entitled “The Seven Deadly Sins
of Broadcasters.” The discussion focused on
the Broadcast Decency Enforcement Act, legislation
proposed by the United States House of Representatives
that would increase fines and broaden the scope of
the FCC to sanction broadcasters and other defined
individuals for broadcasts determined to include indecent
or profane content.
1983
On January 1, 2005, George E. Cornelius
became president and chief executive officer of Arkema
Inc., a U.S. subsidiary of French oil and gas company,
Total S.A. He and his wife, Susan, have two grown
sons. In his spare time, George enjoys photography
and bicycling.
Diane (Neff) Flaaen was named Arizona
State Counsel for LandAmerica Financial Group, Inc,
a Richmond, VA, corporation that is the parent company
of Commonwealth Land Title Insurance Company, Transnation
Title Insurance Company and Lawyers Title Insurance
Corporation. She has been named vice-president of
each of those subsidiaries. Diane and her husband,
Peder, are the parents of Alex (7) and Eric (4), both
adopted from Russia.
James M. Sheehan was named to the
new U.S. Department of Homeland Security Data Privacy
and Integrity Committee. Jim is general counsel to
Milton Hershey School (PA) and its trust board of
directors.
1984
Robin L. Harley joined the law firm
of Zane, Zane & Rossi, in Schuylkill Haven and
Pine Grove, PA, as an associate. Robin is a member
the board of trustees of the Orwigsburg Area Free
Public Library. She lives with her husband Philip
and their children Caitlin and Brendan.
1985
Robert J. DeSousa has been very busy
in recent months. He was named chief executive officer
of the Vartan Group Inc. The Vartan Group, Inc., is
an umbrella organization for several companies and
trusts in central Pennsylvania, which concentrate
in the building and leasing of commercial space, land
development and banking. He also serves as secretary
and general counsel of the group. In February 2005,
Robert was named to the board of directors of the
National Civil War Museum, Harrisburg, PA. Robert
is a major in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard
28th Infantry Division and serves as a judge advocate
general, chief of administrative claims. In March,
2005, in recognition of his performance on significant
disciplinary cases effecting the Division, he was
awarded The Pennsylvania Commendation medal. Robert,
his wife Elizabeth, and their four children live in
West Hanover Township, PA.
1986
U.S. Senator Richard J. Santorum
(R-PA) was featured, along with Pennsylvania Governor
Ed Rendell, in a March 2005, Harrisburg, PA Sunday
Patriot News article which recognized the pair
as “Pennsylvania’s Powerbrokers.”
1988
J. Paul Helvy has joined McNees Wallace
& Nurick’s Harrisburg, PA office. Paul will
chair the family law group.
Robert D. MacMahon has joined the
Philadelphia, PA firm of Weber Gallagher. His practice
focuses on premises liability, security liability
and dram shop litigation, with clients including concert
promoters and concert venues.
Michael A. O’Pake has opened
a second office in Pottsville, PA. He continues to
have a location in Mahanoy, PA. A sole practitioner,
Michael concentrates his practice in family law, real
estate, municipal and school district representation,
bankruptcy and civil litigation. He lives in Pottsville
with his wife, Jeanette, and children Michael and
Caleigh.
1989
Stephen P. Sloane, an assistant Centre
County (PA) district attorney, was selected as the
winner of the first installment of “Centre County’s
Story,” a short-story contest sponsored by the
Centre Daily Times.
1990
On January 1, 2005, Sean P. Clark
started the new general practice firm of Zito &
Clark, LLP in Wethersfield, Connecticut. He continues
to practice in the area of creditors’ rights,
bankruptcy, foreclosure, water rights and title claims.
On weekends, he enjoys racing and sailing on his boat,
“Leprechaun.”
1991
Frank S. Ravitch, professor of law
at the Michigan State University College of Law, presented
“When Religious Subjects Become Legal Objects”
to students at the Dickinson Law School. Professor
Ravitch recently wrote an amicus brief to
the United States Supreme Court on behalf of the Interfaith
Alliance and the Horace Mann League in support of
the petition for writ of certiorari in Chandler
v. Siegelman, a school prayer case from Alabama.
He regularly speaks on topics related to church/state
and civil rights law to a wide range of national and
local organizations.
1993
Rochelle D. Quiggle, of Krasno, Krasno
& Onwudinjo, was part of the firm’s recent
business profile in the Republican & Herald
(PA). Rochelle concentrates her practice in workers’
compensation. She is a member of the Schuylkill Country
Women’s Law Caucus, Big Brothers/Big Sisters,
the Pottsville Business and Professional Women’s
Club and the YWCA. She lives in North Manheim Township
with her husband James P. Wallbillich and their son
Thaddeus.
1994
Lavery, Faherty, Young & Patterson, P.C., Harrisburg,
PA, named Cheryl L. (Regan) Kovaly
a partner in the firm. Cheryl concentrates her practice
in the areas of civil rights, municipal liability,
labor and employment law, professional liability,
premises liability and personal injury matters.
Michael J. Kowalski has been named
to a one year term on the board of governors of the
Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association. Michael is
a shareholder in the firm of Hourigan, Kluger and
Quinn, P.C.
Andrew K. Stutzman was admitted
to partnership in the Philadelphia office of Stradley
Ronon Stevens & Young, LLP. Andrew is a member
of the litigation department, focusing his practice
on complex commercial litigation in state and federal
courts, including bankruptcy courts.
1995
In 2004, L. Todd Kelly was named
a partner at the Houston, TX firm of Haskins Gregan
and Kelly. He was also admitted to the Million Dollar
Advocate's Forum. Additionally, Todd also was selected
as one of “Texas' Top Lawyers for the People”
for 2005 by H-Houston Magazine.
Matthew J. Parker, of the elder
law firm of Marshall & Associates, has been awarded
the status of Certified Elder Law Attorney by the
National Elder Law Foundation.
1996
In January 2005, Buchanan Ingersoll PC named Stephanie
L. Gill a shareholder. Stephanie is a member
of the Pittsburgh office’s Corporate Finance
& Technology Section.
Melissa (Calhoon) Jones joined Tydings
& Rosenberg, Baltimore, MD, as an associate in
the firm’s Business Department. Melissa’s
practice focuses on all aspects of labor and employment
law.
Michael D. O’Mara was recently
admitted to partnership in the Philadelphia office
of Stradly Ronon Stevens & Young, LLP. He is a
member of the firm’s Litigation Department,
representing individuals and corporations in class
action, RICO, unfair competition, securities, business
torts, professional liability, insurance and technology
related claims.
1997
Lucille J. Johnston-Walsh was the
course planner and moderator for the Pennsylvania
Bar Institute’s “Current Issues for Child
Advocates” continuing legal education seminar
on April 22, 2005.
Ashley (Himes) Kranich has joined
the State College, PA office of McNees Wallace &
Nurick. Ashley will practice in the asset planning
and federal taxation group.
In January, 2005, High, Swartz, Roberts & Seidel
LLP of Norristown, PA named Eric B. Smith
a partner in the firm. Eric practices in the areas
of real estate, municipal law and commercial litigation.
1998
Rachel (Castillo) Rosser and husband,
Andrew, welcomed a son, Kai Joseph, on January 5,
2005. Big sister, Sophia, turned 2 on January 12,
2005.
1999
Gregory B. Francis recently joined
the Law Office of Jane P. Marks. Greg practices family
law exclusively in Chester County (PA).
2000
Jessica (Becker) Rhoades is pleased
to announce her engagement to Mark Brewbaker. They
will be married on November 12, 2005. Jessica has
been working for the Cumberland Country Public Defender
Office since her graduation.
Jay Davidson Susanin won first place
in custom picture frame manufacturer Larson-Juhl’s
recent nationwide contest. Designers were shown in
a series of household rooms and were challenged to
come up with a concept for “the next room”
in the series. Jay’s entry, “The Play
Room,” will appear in trade magazines as well
as Traditional Home, Veranda and Architectural
Digest.
2001
Christopher
J. Conrad and his wife, Jennifer, are pleased
to announce the birth of their daughter, Lindsay Meredith,
on December 17, 2004. Lindsay is their first child.

Brian K. Marshall recently joined
the Bellefonte, PA office of Miller, Kistler, Campbell,
Miller, Williams & Benson Inc. Brian concentrates
his practice in the areas of estate planning, estate
administration, family law and criminal law.
2002
Steven T. Boell recently joined Fitzpatrick
Lentz & Bubba as an associate. His practice areas
include appellate litigation, administrative law,
real estate, zoning, land use and development.
After passing the Delaware bar exam and completing
his judicial clerkship with The Honorable Jan
R. Jurden ’88 in the Delaware Superior
Court, Patrick Costello joined the
Wilmington office of Philadelphia law firm, Klehr
Harrison Harvey Branzburg & Ellers LLP. Patrick
practices in the litigation department with a focus
on commercial litigation. He sends the following message:

On November 17, 2004, Deborah (Lonabaugh)
Shuff and husband, Brian, welcomed a new
addition, daughter, Darrah Lin. Deborah continues
to practice at the Princeton office of Drinker Biddle
& Reath LLP. She focuses her practice on environmental
litigation.
2003
The St. Rocco’s Holy Name Society has named
Jarrett J. Ferentino co-chairmen
of St. Rocco’s 57th Annual Palm Sunday Smoker.
Jarrett is an assistant district attorney in Luzerne
(PA) Country. He is engaged to marry Dr. Nicole Linskey
this May.
Gregory Riley recently joined Mintzer,
Sarowitz, Zeris, Ledva, and Meyers, Philadelphia,
PA as an associate. Greg practices in the areas of
general insurance defense litigation, motor vehicle
liability, common carrier negligence and premises
liability.
In January 2005, Carlisle (PA) Borough Council appointed
Sean M. Shultz to fill a council
vacancy.
2004
Jeremy M. Pelphrey has joined Davis
& Campbell L.L.C., Peoria, IL. Jeremy will practice
in the area of employment benefit plans, employee
stock ownership plans, tax law, and corporate transactions.
In December 2004, Angel Mae T. Webby
was sworn into the Luzerne County (PA) Bar Association.
She is an associate with the Powell Law Group, Drums,
PA. She practices in the areas of products liability,
medical malpractice, personal injury, workers’
compensation and criminal defense.
Multiple Years
T. Andrew Lingle ’92 and Kathryn
(Spruill) Lingle ’91 announce the birth
of son Daniel in June 2004. Their other children are
Jacob (6) and Lauren (4). Andy is a sole practitioner
in Richmond, VA, and focuses his practice on business
transactions and real estate. Katy is associated with
the firm of Midkiff, Munci and Ross, also in Richmond,
where she practices workers’ compensation litigation
and counseling.
